1 in 3 People in the US Have Prediabetes - and What You Can Do About It!
Look to your left. Look to your
right. According to a new study, if you don’t already have diabetes now, statistically, one of
you is going to have it in the years ahead. Those are not good odds in my
book – so please keep reading!
Did you know that just 20 years ago, only
about 10% adults had this disease, whereas now it’s 12% to 14%? But the really
shocking statistic is that 38% of the people in this country now have prediabetes!
Another eye opener - Type2 Diabetes
used to have a different name: Adult Onset Diabetes, and that was because it
was unheard
for children to get it. When it
became pretty commonplace for kids to develop this nasty disease, they had to
change the name!
So – 13% plus 38% equals 51% of
Americans either have diabetes already, or are prediabetic, and unless they
change their habits, are likely to become a full diabetic.
Look to your left. Look to your
right. If you don’t already have it, how do you know if you are in the 38% -
the high risk group?
The first step is to get your fasting
blood sugar checked. On an empty stomach a normal morning blood sugar is less
than 100. Between 100-126 is prediabetes
and above 126 is diabetes.
How often should you get these tests?
If you’re at high risk, maybe every few
months - if not, maybe every three
years.
You are more at risk if you have a
family history of diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, are
overweight or obese, or had diabetes during a pregnancy. Certain ethnic groups
and seniors are also at higher risk.
The good news is that if you are in the
high risk group, you can make some simple changes, and have a good chance of
preventing it from developing
It isn’t as hard as you might think.
I owned three centers in CA called “Positive Changes,” and it was very common
for people who actually had Type2 – some of them even on insulin – and
completely change their health profile and symptoms. I’m not a doctor, so I
don’t know if that means that no longer had this terrible disease – but I do
know that when they lost weight, exercised, and reduced their stress, most of
them lowered their blood sugar levels, no longer had symptoms, and were even
able to get off their medications.
More soon on what you can do, the
symptoms, and results of NOT doing something to keep this from happening to
you!
